Type: O/W (Oil in Water) Type Emulsion — for Internal Use
📖 Theory
Castor oil is a fixed oil and it does not mix with water on its own. To make these two liquids mix together, we need a third substance — called an emulsifying agent. This third substance sits between oil and water droplets and keeps them stable together. This kind of mixture is called an Emulsion.
In this practical, we are making an O/W (Oil-in-Water) type emulsion — which means oil droplets are scattered inside the water phase. This type is generally used for internal medicines (taken by mouth).
We are using Gum Acacia as the emulsifying agent because:
- It forms a strong film around oil droplets.
- It keeps the emulsion stable for a long time.
- It is safe and suitable for internal use.
🔢 Ratio for Primary Emulsion
The standard ratio for making a primary emulsion is:

🔬 Procedure — Wet Gum Method
We are using the Wet Gum Method in this practical. Follow these steps carefully:
- Clean the mortar and pestle — Make sure they are thoroughly clean and completely dry before you start.
- Weigh the gum — Weigh out 2 gm of Gum Acacia and transfer it into the mortar.
- Add water to gum — Measure 4 ml of water and slowly add it to the gum. Triturate (mix and grind) it well to form a smooth, thick mucilage.
- Add castor oil slowly — Now measure 8 ml of Castor Oil and add it to the mucilage in small portions at a time. After each addition, triturate it briskly and continuously — do not stop in between!
- Listen for the click — Keep trituration going until you hear a "clicking sound" from the mortar and the mixture turns white or creamy white. At this stage, your Primary Emulsion is ready! ✅
- Dilute with more water — Now slowly add the remaining water (about 10 ml more) in small amounts with constant stirring to get a homogeneous emulsion.
- Make up the final volume — Transfer the emulsion to a measuring cylinder and add enough water to make the total volume 30 ml. Mix it well.
- Transfer and label — Pour the final emulsion into a clean glass bottle. Cork it, wipe the bottle clean, and apply the label properly.
- Add auxiliary label — Attach the secondary label: "Shake Well Before Use" 🏷️
⚠️ Important Note: The clicking sound during trituration is your signal that the primary emulsion has formed correctly. Don't stop before you hear it!
💡 Uses
Castor Oil is used as a purgative (laxative). It helps in relieving constipation by stimulating bowel movement.
⚠️ Precautions
- Because castor oil acts quickly, it should not be given at bedtime. It is best administered early in the morning.
- Always add oil in small quantities during emulsification. Adding too much at once will break the emulsion.
- Trituration should be continuous and brisk — stopping in between can disturb the emulsification process.
- The mortar and pestle must be completely dry before starting, especially in the dry gum method.
- Always shake the bottle before use as emulsions tend to separate on standing.

Castor Oil Emulsion has been successfully prepared and submitted. The prepared emulsion is white, homogeneous, and stable. It is an O/W type emulsion suitable for internal use as a purgative.
